It’s hard to believe it’s “Fall” when it’s still 96 degrees outside this afternoon. At least the mornings have been cooler!
Lots happening this past week, the main event being “Hello Week”.
Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization led by several family members who lost loved ones at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012. Their sole purpose is to prevent gun violence so that no other parent experiences what they did. It is an organization that prevents gun violence by teaching adults and youth how to recognize the signs and signals of individuals who may be at-risk of hurting themselves or others and how to intervene to get them help. In every school and community, there are young people who suffer silently because they feel left out, alone, or invisible. Social isolation is a growing epidemic in our schools and across the United States. Young people who are isolated can become victims of bullying, violence, and/or depression. Many then pull further away from society, struggle with learning and social development, and/or choose to hurt themselves or others as a result.
This is why we are brought Sandy Hook Promise’s “Start with Hello” week to International School of
Tucson this past week for our whole school from Nursery to Middle School.
“Start with Hello“ is an age-appropriate training that raises awareness and educates students about
social isolation and how to create a connected and inclusive classroom, school, and community.
We dedicated the week to different activities that invited students to be inclusive and aware of the
needs of others around them as well as themselves.
